 February 2018 Chapter Meeting

Prior to the dinner meeting, Angie Waterworth from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory presented on "Operations Research Project Management" for the education session. Operations Research (OR), which has its origins in World War I and utilizes mathematics and computer science, is geared to support the decision maker in such areas as logistics, manufacturing, finance and transportation.  The presentation included the "Airport Risk Assessment Model" Project, which was deployed at the SEATAC airport and was designed to advise the airport security team on where to deploy security resources during the day.  The board would like to say a big thank you to Angie for her work and time to deliver the education session.

Our dinner keynote speakers were Lisa Black and Sharon Grant-Ghan from Friends of Badger Mountain, who presented on "Planning and Building the Badger Mountain Trails".  The Friends of Badger Mountain was founded over 15 years ago and originated from the Intermountain Alpine Club.  Their goal was to preserve the ridge line and after being able to set aside 574 acres as non-motorized space, trail building began in 2005.  Lisa detailed the process that has gone into planning the building of the Badger Mountain trails, including working with both the city and county and addressing privacy issues due to trails being close to homes. Sharon discussed the challenges of involving the public in the voluntary building and on-going maintenance of the trails and strategies for engaging them as stakeholders in the long term care of the ridges. The public trail vision is to link Little Badger Mountain, Badger Mountain, Candy Mountain and Red Mountain to create a 20 mile trail and all are encouraged to come out and support the effort to build new trails and maintain existing trails. The board would like to say a big thank you to Lisa and Sharon for their work and time to deliver the keynote presentation.

2018 Project of the Year Awards Gala

The 2018 Project of the Year Awards Gala was held on February 23, 2018, to recognize and honor project teams for superior performance and execution of exemplary project management for projects completed in 2017.  We were pleased to welcome over 90 project managers, project team members, executive level managers and their guests to the event, which was again held at the Richland Community Center.

The 2018 Project of the Year award was presented to contractor CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company (CHPRC) (Project Manager:  Andre LaBonte) for the "Plutonium Uranium Extraction Facility (PUREX) Tunnel 1" project.  The CHPRC project team, working with small business partners Intermech Inc. and Ojeda Business Ventures, successfully grouted Tunnel 1 of the Hanford Plutonium Uranium Extraction plant following a partial collapse in May 2017. Crews worked mostly at night to place several thousand cubic yards of engineered grout into the tunnel. The grout will reduce the risk of further collapse and increase the protection for workers, the public, and the environment from radiological hazards, while not precluding future remedial actions or final closure decisions.

The People's Choice Award, which was selected by ballot during the Gala,  was presented to Mission Support Alliance (MSA) (Project Manager: Tri-Party Agreement Agency - Public Involvement Officers) for the "Hanford Live" project. Hanford Live was an innovative two-hour broadcast held in April 2017. The interactive program allowed the public to engage in real time with Hanford managers via multiple online platforms. Hanford Live was a collaborative effort involving staff from the Department of Energy, numerous contractors, and the Hanford regulators – Washington Department of Ecology and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – with additional participation from the Hanford Advisory Board.

The chapter would like to recognize and thank the other two nominees for their efforts, superior projects, and excellent presentations at the gala. 

The "AW-106 Pump Replacement" Project, which was completed by Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) (Project Manager:  Dustin May).  WRPS completed the replacement of the failed Hanford Site Tank Farms AW-106 pump, which was required to support the 242-A Evaporator.  By implementing a new suite of tools the work force saved approximately 800 mrem of combined dose uptake compared to previous pump replacements.  These new tools will be used on future pump replacements for ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) practices.

The "2017 Luncheon Project Featuring Libby Moore" project, which was completed by the Women Helping Women Fund Tri-Cities (WHWF-TC) (Project Manager:  Sarah Timmons).  In October 2017, WHWF-TC completed a project to put on a luncheon involving inspirational speaker Libby Moore to raise funds, which are awarded through their grant program to non-profit agencies in the Benton and Franklin counties.  The goal being to raise money that supports community programs that make a positive difference for women and children.

Calendar of Events

Chapter Program Meeting

The next Chapter meeting will be March 6, 2018, at CG Public House.  There will be an education session:  "Integrating Process Engineering Principles to Improve the Success of a Research, Development and Deployment Project", presented by Jared Wight from PNNL from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.  The dinner meeting will run from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and the keynote speaker will be Greg Herman, PMO Director at PNNL, who will speak on “Bringing Together Business Operations Into a Common Framework for More Impactful Business Solutions" . 2018 PMP Exam Prep. Boot Camps

The Columbia River Basin PMI Chapter of the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI)® is sponsoring in 2018 three, 4-Day, Boot Camps presented by industry-leading Project Management Expert Steve Norton, PMP and PMI Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.). Steve Norton’s Boot Camp will prepare you to take the PMP® / CAPM® exams and earn the prestigious PMI® certifications.

Volunteer News

Call for Presenters.  Earn More PDUs by Presenting at the Monthly Chapter Program Meetings!

If you are searching for ways to earn more PDUs for zero cost then consider presenting an educational topic at an upcoming Chapter program meeting.  The Chapter’s Board Members established a one-hour educational session,  which is given each month prior to the Monthly Chapter Dinner Meeting.  If you are the presenter, you earn PDUs for your time spent creating and presenting the material.  Any subject of interest to Project Managers is a possible topic which includes all areas of the PMBOK.  In addition, general management, strategic and business management and leadership subjects are also appropriate for educational sessions.

If you have expertise in an area and are willing to present a one-hour educational session at a Chapter Program Meeting (4:30 PM to 5:30 PM), then please contact Chuck Gunzel at charles.gunzel@pnnl.gov for further information.  Volunteering helps your fellow chapter members too!
